If the Eagles star maintains his current pace, he would narrowly surpass the record. He's on track for 2,121.6 yards this season if his average of 124.8 yards per game continues over 17 games. Obviously, there are no decimals in yards, so he would end the season with 2,121 yards.
A significant question now is whether he and the Eagles starters will play in Week 18. If the Eagles have already secured their playoff seed, it wouldn't be surprising for Philadelphia to rest starters, which could complicate Barkley's pursuit.
This will be something to monitor in the short term. Barkley truly has a legitimate shot at the record.
The Philadelphia Eagles have the opportunity to achieve more than just securing a top playoff position in the coming weeks.
Philadelphia currently occupies the No. 2 seed in the NFC, but there's more at stake in the last four games of the season. Eagles superstar Saquon Barkley has performed so well in his inaugural season in Philadelphia that he has a genuine chance to break the NFL single-season rushing record set by the legendary Eric Dickerson in 1984.
Dickerson established the record while playing for the Los Angeles Rams, achieving an astonishing 2,105 rushing yards that season.
Barkley has the potential to exceed that number in the final four games if things go his way. Currently, he has amassed 1,623 rushing yards this season, leading the league with an average of 124.8 rushing yards per game. As a result, Barkley needs 483 rushing yards in the remaining four games to break the record.
