Even though the Phillies have faced challenging playing conditions with low temperatures and inclement weather so far in this young season, manager Thomson refrained from using it to cover to the teams shortcomings. "That can be an excuse," Thomson said prior to the game, "and I don't like making excuses."
Alec Bohm kickstarted the decisive second inning with a single, followed by walks to Bryson Stott and Nick Castellanos, loading the bases. Brandon Marsh's sacrifice fly and Johan Rojas's groundout advanced the runners, setting the stage for Kyle Schwarber's crucial two-out, two-run single. Exactly what you'd expect from such a seasoned lead-off man.
The Phillies consistently pressured Corbin, but it wasn't until the seventh inning when they capitalized again, with Harper's RBI single contributing to their offensive efforts.
Harper's three-hit night, along with strong performances from Schwarber, Bohm, J.T. Realmuto, and Bryson Stott, highlighted the offensive depth of the team and gave some hope that the bats are starting to warm up a bit.
Despite Nola's early stumble, the starting rotation has generally excelled, boasting a 1.65 ERA aside from his initial performance. As they look ahead to the final games of the series against the Nationals, the Phillies aim to establish dominance against a team they should easily overpower, especially considering their lukewarm 7-6 record against them in the previous season.
Aaron Nola bounced back admirably from a lackluster initial outing against the Braves, guiding the Phillies to a 4-0 victory over the Nationals on Friday, while the team showcased an improved offensive display, despite squandering numerous scoring opportunities.
In his first start against the Braves, Nola struggled, conceding six earned runs on 11 hits against a formidable lineup. However, facing a rebuilding Nationals team, that may they have some young talent on their roster but clearly lacks a consistent power threat, Nola fared much better. Despite challenging weather conditions, with a chilly 42-degree temperature and gusty winds, Nola pitched 5⅔ scoreless innings, surrendering only two hits, both in the second inning.
Although there wasn't a surplus of swings-and-misses, Nola managed to keep the Nationals scoreless, albeit with a lower swinging strike rate than his usual standards.
Despite issuing four walks, Nola effectively shut down the Nationals, enabling the bullpen to secure the win, with solid performances from Matt Strahm, Jose Alvarado, Jeff Hoffman, Gregory Soto, and Yunior Marte.
The Phils capitalized on a three-run surge in the second inning against Patrick Corbin, displaying a series of productive plate appearances. Despite this, they left multiple scoring opportunities on the table throughout the game, stranding baserunners in various situations.
While the offensive output showed promise with nine walks and nine hits, including a standout three-homer game from Bryce Harper, the Phillies are still waiting for a collective offensive breakthrough.
