Marte got Drury to deliver a very probable inning-ending double-play ball to Trea Turner that ate him up and bounced away for no play, putting two men on for Rengifo who fittingly capitalized on the error on the next pitch with a drive to right that gave the Angels the lead.
Marte would allow a double to designated hitter, Cole Tucker, and an RBI single to former Phils’ #1 pick, Mickey Moniak, to increase the home advantage to 5-3.
With one out in the top of the eight, Turner singled and stole second before coming home to make it 4-5 via an RBI single by Alec Bohm, his 30th RBI on the season, one away from the major league lead.
After saving the game for the Angels yesterday for his fifth out of six save opportunities on the season, Angels’ closer Carlos got Brandon Marsh to strikeout to begin the ninth inning with only the light hitting bottom third of the Phillies order to get through for the victory.
Then Nick Castellanos mustered his third and biggest hit of the night as he sent a first-pitch fastball into the right field seats to tie the game.
The game seemed destined for extra innings. Then Bryson Stott inside-outed a slider that bounced out of play for a ground rule double to bring Johan Rojas to the plate. He got the biggest knock of his young career to break the tie.
Jeff Hoffman did what Jeff Hoffman does and the series is now level.
Zack Wheeler (2-3, 1.93) takes on Patrick Sandoval (1-4, 6.33) in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon.
Some late game heroics from the much maligned bottom of the order salvaged a game and a series that looked to be lost as the Philadelphia Phillies came back to defeat the Los Angeles Angels 7-5 on Tuesday night.
Kyle Schwarber opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a three-run no-doubter homer off Angels’ starter, Tyler Anderson, following a Nick Castellanos single and a four-pitch walk issued to Bryson Stott.
Spencer Turnbull worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the first, then got into a mini-jam in the second after plunking Angels’ second baseman, Brandon Drury, and allowing a single to third baseman, Luis Rengifo, to lead off the frame. Turnbull got the next three batters in order to end the threat, two of which being Logan O’Hoppe and Mickey Moniak, former Phils’ collateral in the Brandon Marsh deal.
After a leadoff home run to Angels’ shortstop, Zach Neto, to start the bottom of the third, Turnbull settled down and continued his strong start, setting down ten of the next eleven batters with little difficulty. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, on his 98th pitch of the evening Turnbull got beat for an infield single to Angels’ left fielder, Taylor Ward, and Rob Thomson opted to bring in Yunior Marte to face Drury.
