Trea Turner doubled after Schwarber but Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm both failed to bring him in before a single from Castellanos off the glove of Oneil Cruz did the trick. The Phillies would not offer much offense after this point until the seventh inning, as they had just two hits from the second inning until the seventh.
That is when Bohm broke through for Philadelphia with an RBI single that scored Schwarber from third. The latter led off the inning with a walk, as Pirates reliever Aroldis Chapman struggled with command. Chapman fell behind 3-0 to the next batter in Turner but was able to get Turner to groundout to third in a full count. However, Schwarber was running on the throw and was able to still get to third. Bohm singled through the hole after a Harper walk to tie the game at 3-3.
Despite the walk and an impressive diving defensive play at first, it was another rough day at the plate for Harper. The Phillies star went 0-4 with 3 Ks including an ugly strikeout in the ninth with runners on second and third with one out. This prompted an intentional walk to Bohm and brought Castellanos to the plate who promptly laced the first pitch he saw into center for the win.
The Phillies will try to hand the Pirates their first series loss of the season tomorrow at 1:35. They will send Zack Wheeler (0-2, 1.89 ERA) to the mound against the Pirates’ Mitch Keller (1-1, 5.29 ERA).
It has not been a good start to the season for Nick Castellanos. He does not have an extra base hit, let alone a home run. He’s hitting .182 with a .444 OPS through 15 games. But for one afternoon, Nick Castellanos was the hero.
The Phillies right fielder walked it off with a base hit to center field on one of his best swings of the season, scoring Whit Merrifield from third and giving Philadelphia a much-needed 4-3 win.
The heroics capped off a strong day overall from Castellanos, who earlier singled to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead in the first and made a terrific leaping grab at the wall for the first out in the third inning.
The win was possible thanks to a dominant day from the Phillies bullpen. Starter Spencer Turnbull allowed just 3 runs but only lasted 4 innings, as he battled through deep counts and constant traffic on the bases due to 3 hits and 4 walks. Matt Strahm entered in the fifth with a runner on first and no outs and went on to pitch two innings and retire all six hitters he faced.
He struck out five consecutive batters after a flyout from the first batter he faced in Ke’Bryan Hayes. Strahm has not allowed a run since opening day, logging 7.1 scoreless innings with just two hits and 11 punchouts.
Gregory Soto, Jose Alvarado, and Jeff Hoffman followed Strahm and combined to throw the final three innings and allow a total of one hit and a walk with two strikeouts.
Hayes doubled in the first to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead, but Kyle Schwarber quickly answered with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first. It was Schwarber’s third homer of the year and 33rd leadoff home run of his career. He finished the day 3-3 with two walks, successfully reaching base all five times at the plate. The final time was a single that eventually turned into the winning run.
