
He was aided by a couple of excellent defensive plays by Bryson Stott. First, Stott elevated to catch a line drive off the bat of Ivan Herrera, and later, made a diving stop to rob Alec Burleson of a hit.
The Phillies got a much-needed insurance run in the seventh when Brandon Marsh doubled, and Johan Rojas drove him home with a single.
Things didn’t get any easier for Cardinals hitters after Nola left the game. Matt Strahm finished off the final two hitters in the seventh, Jose Alvarado pitched a clean eighth, and Jeff Hoffman breezed through the ninth to secure the victory.
The Phillies will look to win the series on Saturday when they give the ball to Ranger Suarez. Coming off his worst start of the season, Suarez will likely be pitching with renewed purpose, so things might not get any easier for the Cardinals.
Coming off a losing road trip, the Phillies wanted to start off their homestand on a good note. Thanks to a strong start from Aaron Nola, a dominating performance by the bullpen, and a two-run home run from Edmundo Sosa, they accomplished that goal by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2.
After both teams recorded scoreless first innings, the Phillies got on the board in the second. Alec Bohm led off with a single, advanced to third on Nick Castellanos’ opposite field double, and scored on a Brandon Marsh groundout. Not content with just one run in the inning, the Phillies added two more when Edmundo Sosa didn’t miss a Miles Mikolas slider.
Aaron Nola gave one of those runs back in the next inning when he gave up a home run to Brandon Crawford. He gave up another home run to Nolan Arenado in the seventh, but in between, he was pretty much unhittable. Aside from those two home runs, he only allowed one other hit, and struck out six batters in 6.1 innings.
