Get geared-up for the game

THE JAWN STORE

Nothing except a couple of dugout warnings came of the incident - despite some extra pushing by Giants coach Pat Burrell of all people. Unfortunately, once the game resumed, Harper was unable to deliver an immediate comeuppance, as he grounded out.

After leaving two runners on base in both the third and fourth innings, the Phillies finally added to their total in the fifth when Castellanos’ fly to left center cleared the fence.

Cristopher Sanchez was on the mound for the Phillies. While he hasn’t gotten as much hype as some of his rotation-mates, Sanchez has been excellent lately. He threw six scoreless innings while striking out seven on Wednesday. Sanchez will finish May with a sub-2.50 ERA for the month.

Schwarber and Harper gave the Phillies some insurance in the eighth with RBI singles, but the Phillies didn’t need it. After Sanchez’s day was complete, Gregory Soto and Seranthony Dominguez pitched scoreless innings. The Giants ended the shutout in the ninth against Spencer Turnbull, but they never seriously threatened a comeback.

The Phillies will head home, and thanks to this effort, the flight shouldn’t be too somber. While it wasn’t a successful road trip, 2-4 feels a lot less unsuccessful than 1-5. The Phillies get a much-needed day off and will hopefully regain their winning ways against the Cardinals on Friday.

It would have been understandable if the Phillies hadn’t brought their A-game. It was the final contest of a six-game road trip that hadn’t been going very well, and it was played at a stadium where they almost never win. (Nine straight losses at Oracle Park entering today!) It didn’t seem out of the realm of possibility for the Phillies to have mailed it in on Wednesday afternoon in anticipation of their flight home.

Instead, they got a strong start from Cristopher Sanchez, big games at the plate by Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos, and a little bit of extra inspiration from a couple of inside pitches. The result was a 6-1 win over the San Francisco Giants that made a potentially horrible series and road trip seem a little less awful.

After being shut out the night before, it didn’t take long for the Phillies to surpass that output.

They added another run in the second thanks to an RBI single by Cristian Pache. However, they left the bases loaded, failing to deliver a big inning.

Because the Phillies are seemingly incapable of playing a normal mid-week afternoon game, things got a bit interesting in the fourth. With two runners on base, Giants starter Kyle Harrison threw an inside pitch to Bryce Harper which Harper didn’t appreciate much. When Harrison threw the next one even further inside - the benches and bullpens cleared.
