Baltimore tagged Wheeler again in the third, this time with a home run by Adley Rutschman to begin the frame. The Phillies offense would add two runs in the fourth to make the score 4-2 and appeared primed to get back into the game, but Wheeler imploded in the fifth. He allowed four more runs on an RBI single to Anthony Santander and then a three-run home run to Westburg that was upheld after a review. Wheeler exited the game two batters later after following a single to Cowser and gave way to Spencer Turnbull. Wheeler’s final line was 4.1 IP, 9 hits, 8 ER, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Rob Thomson was ejected in the sixth inning by home plate umpire Mike Estabrook after a hit by pitch to Garrett Stubbs was overturned following a lengthy discussion between the umpires.
Frustration with Estabrook was boiling all game on the Philadelphia bench, as it appeared he missed numerous calls against Phillies hitters, particularly on pitches away to left-handed hitters, and gave Burnes a wider zone than Wheeler.
Outside of that fifth inning rally to cut the deficit in half, the Phillies offense couldn’t muster much against Corbin Burnes. Despite allowing 7 hits, Burnes finished six innings and allowed just two runs and picked up 7 strikeouts. Harper and Bohm both hit back-to-back doubles in the 7th to give the Phillies 3 runs, but it wasn’t nearly enough to dig them out of an 8-3 hole. Bohm nevertheless finished the day 3-4 with 2 RBIs and ended this series 8-13 with 5 RBIs.
The Phillies will play their first true home game since June 5th tomorrow when they open a three-game series against the San Diego Padres. Trea Turner is expected to make his return from a hamstring injury while Cristopher Sanchez (3-3, 3.07) takes the mound against Randy Vasquez for the Padres.
The Phillies ended their long trip through London, Boston, and Baltimore with an 8-3 defeat at the hands of the Orioles. Zack Wheeler allowed 8 runs and a career-high 4 home runs and lasted just 4.2 innings while the Phillies offense went 2-14 with runners in scoring position against Corbin Burnes and the Baltimore bullpen. Philadelphia is now 2-4 in the six games back stateside after the London series.
Wheeler wasn’t right all day, and it was evident from the first batter he faced. After a 2-2 pitch that was in the zone but was called a ball, Wheeler allowed a lead-off home run to Gunnar Henderson four pitches later.
Wheeler escaped the rest of the first unscathed save for an error on Bryce Harper but had to throw 27 total pitches to do so. He allowed a lead-off single to Jordan Westburg to begin the second and two batters later allowed another home run to Colton Cowser. This one traveled 443 feet to center field and pushed the Orioles lead to 3-0.
