Kody Clemens grounded into a double play before Schwarber ripped a double into the gap for his third hit of the night. Schwarber reached base all four times he came to the plate in this game, going 3-3 with a walk. Bryson Stott walked to knock Lawrence out of the game and former Phillie John Curtiss entered to face Bryce Harper. Harper promptly broke the game wide open with a three-run home run to left field.
The Phillies would add one more after an Alec Bohm double and a Nick Castellanos single to finish off the six-run inning. Castellanos was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double to end the inning.
Battling
Aaron Nola wasn’t at his best and struggled with command early. But he was able to still finish six innings while allowing three runs and gave his team a chance to win. The Phillies bullpen was also able to hold the deficit at one run and bought the offense time to come alive.
The Phillies took an early lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Harper off of Dakaota Hudson. The lead did not last long however, as Nola walked two straight batters with two outs before allowing an RBI single to Brendan Rodgers that tied the game at 1-1. Nola needed 32 pitches to get through the inning.
Nola once again ran into trouble in the second after allowing a leadoff single to Brenton Doyle who then stole his first of three bags on the night. Jacob Stallings, fresh off of his game-tying pinch hit home run last night, singled to put runners on the corners. A Hunter Goodman groundout drove in Doyle and gave Colorado a 2-1 lead. Nola escaped further damage by inducing a popout to Charlie Blackmon and a caught stealing thanks to Stubbs.
Ezequiel Tovar led off the Rockies’ half of the third with a single to left that Marsh bobbled after slipping, allowing Tovar to go to second base. A pair of groundouts from Ryan McMahon and Kris Bryant brought in the third run of the night for Colorado.
Nola allowed another single to Stallings in the fourth, but then retired the next seven batters in order to end his night. His final line was 6 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 K.
Seranthony Dominguez was first on in relief of Nola in the seventh. He allowed a single and a stolen base to Doyle to begin the inning before striking out Stallings for the first out. But Doyle then stole third to give the Rockies an opportunity for some insurance. Dominguez rebounded to get the final two outs on groundouts that did not allow the run to score.
Jose Ruiz entered in the eighth and worked around a leadoff single with a pair of strikeouts and a lineout to left fielder Kody Clemens who stayed in the game after pinch hitting for Johan Rojas. Ruiz has now appeared in 8 games this season and has a 1.80 ERA with 10 strikeouts to 4 walks.
Spencer Turnbull came in to finish the ninth and allowed a run on two hits but finished the inning with three strikeouts to seal the win.
The Phillies looked to be on the brink of losing back-to-back games for the first time since April 23rd-24th and their first series since April 3rd. Their offense sputtered through eight innings before exploding for six runs in the ninth to win 8-4. It was their season high for runs scored in an inning.
The ninth began with a walk by Brandon Marsh against lefty reliever Jalen Beeks. Rockies manager Bud Black then elected to replace Beeks with right hander Justin Lawrence. Edmundo Sosa greeted him with a triple down the line that scored Marsh from first and tied the game at 3-3. Sosa is now hitting .333 on the season with a 1.041 OPS.
Garrett Stubbs followed Sosa with an RBI single for his second hit of the night to give the Phillies the lead. Stubbs had previously helped pull the Phillies within one run in the fifth with a single and a later delayed steal of third base. The stolen base allowed Kyle Schwarber to drive him in with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-2.
