That brought old friend Rhys Hoskins to the plate for one more time in his return series. Nola won the battle of the former longest tenured Phillies however, inducing a popup that was caught by a running Edmundo Sosa in shallow left field.
Stand by me
Nola got a little help from his defense, first with a tremendous leaping grab from Stott in the third inning. Joey Ortiz led off the inning with a single before Stott robbed Gary Sanchez of a base hit and possibly kept a run off the board, as Ortiz was ultimately stranded at second.
Cristian Pache also pitched in with a diving grab in the fourth to take away a two out base hit from Adames.
Spanish Bombs
Brewers’ starter Aaron Ashby was cruising much like Nola, as he allowed just one hit through four innings. That one hit was a leadoff single from Kyle Schwarber in the first inning. However, Ashby had three walks entering the fifth before adding two more with walks to Garrett Stubbs and Pache at the bottom of the order with no outs. Schwarber stepped to the plate and grounded into a double play after just two pitches, putting the best scoring chance of the afternoon in serious jeopardy.
But Nick Castellanos came to the rescue once again, launching a two-run home run to left center field for the only runs scored by either team on the day.
Castellanos is now hitting .322 over his last 8 games with six extra base hits and two home runs. He has just four strikeouts to two walks over that span.
Clampdown
Jeff Hoffman and Jose Alvarado came on in relief of Nola and pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to secure the sweep. Stott once again helped out his pitcher with a diving stop in the eighth to throw out Sal Frelick to begin the inning. Hoffman then walked Ortiz on four pitches before Sanchez lined out directly to Whit Merrifield in left and Blake Perkins struck out. Alvarado allowed a one out single to Contreras in between striking out the side, finishing the game in a seven-pitch battle with Adames that ended with a called strike on the inside corner.
Death or Glory
The Phillies next game will be on Saturday at 1:10pm from London Stadium in the United Kingdom. Ranger Suárez will make his first start since taking a line drive off the pitching hand against Sean Manaea of the Mets. The Brits have no idea what brand of baseball they’re in for when the Phillies take on the Mets.
The Phillies finished off a three-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers with a 2-0 win behind stellar pitching from Aaron Nola and a two-run home run from Nick Castellanos. They will board their flight for London with an eight-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East and one game ahead of the Yankees for the most wins in baseball.
Wrong ‘em Boyo
The Phillies rode another strong performance from their starting pitcher in this series to a win. They entered today with the best ERA for a starting rotation in all of baseball at 2.69 and that was before Aaron Nola cruised through 7 shutout innings. Nola threw 93 pitches, 68 of them for strikes. His curveball was particularly strong, generating 7 whiffs on 39 pitches with 12 foul balls. Nola allowed just two hits and walked none with five strikeouts.
Nola ran into trouble in his final inning, allowing a leadoff double to William Contreras to bring Christian Yelich as the tying run to the plate. Yelich battled for eight pitches before grounding out to Bryson Stott but moving the runner third. Willy Adames then hit a grounder to Alec Bohm at third who made a good pick and throw to cut down the runner at home to keep the Brewers off the board.
