Jesse Winker gave the Nationals the lead in the fifth inning after getting a fastball right down the middle from Nola. He robbed the Phillies of multiple hits and gave the Nationals their only glimmer of hope.
Williams ran into pitch count problems with his junk-ball approach. He threw 45 combined sweepers and sliders but only generated five whiffs. His changeup was also mainly an auto-take to Phillies hitters.
So after he walked Kyle Schwarber in the bottom of the fifth, his start was over for Jacob Barnes.
After a Stott walk, Harper slapped a cutter into right field to load the bases for another Bohm sac fly to tie the game. Davey Martinez came right out to pull him with Kody Clemens on deck.
Rob Thomson let Clemens face left-handed pitcher Robert Garcia and Kody rewarded his manager. Clemens caught a hanging slider to right field for a two-run single to make it 5-3. Castellanos extended their lead to three with a first-pitch single into left field.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jordan Weems was Martinez’s next pick to slow down the Phillies offense. Johan Rojas reached and stole second base, Schwarber walked, and Harper pulled a double to right-center field to bring both of them home.
The Nationals used a total of six pitchers today and most of them lacked effectiveness, especially Tanner Rainey, who walked Rojas and Schwarber in two uncompetitive plate appearances. After a couple of flyouts from Stott and Harper, Bohm blew this game open with a blast to left.
Spencer Turnbull came into mop-up duty to finish off another sweep. They’re 34-14 and haven’t lost a series since the season’s first week. It doesn’t matter how but they pull away almost every game.
Every day the Phillies come to the ballpark believing they’re going to win. Over 44,000 people go to the ballpark also sharing the same belief. And however many watching at home. Even one-horse believes it.
Nationals starter Trevor Williams came in Sunday afternoon with a 1.92 ERA and 2.86 FIP in 41.2 innings pitched. Given his career, it was a hot streak, but the Phillies can put it to bed.
After his game-tying home run in the ninth last night, Kody Clemens got the start at second base. He scorched a double past Eddie Rosario in right field in the second inning, followed by a Nick Castellanos single to make it 1-0.
Bryson Stott began the bottom of the third with a single to left. Bryce Harper then lined a 108.6 mph single that went off the glove of Ildemaro Vargas which slowed the ball down enough for Stott to go to third.
Alec Bohm got one of his five RBIs tonight with a sacrifice flyball to make it 2-0.
Aaron Nola got into in the fourth but it wasn’t entirely his fault. Vargas hit a soft grounder right at Clemens at second base but Harper tried to get to it and make an incredible throw but instead, the throw pulled Nola off the bag.
After getting ahead 0-2 to Rosario, a free swinger with a notoriously high chase rate, Nola threw a fastball that was pulled down the right field line to tie the game.
