Cristopher Sánchez gave the Phillies a strong six-inning performance by way of the ground ball. His only run allowed came from a Perkins leadoff double and a couple of productive Brewers outs.
He put up a 2.03 ERA in May by limiting the walks and getting ground balls.
Tonight he walked just one batter and got thirteen groundball outs. Teams just aren’t able to get his stuff in the air consistently.
Orion Kerkering has looked like one of the best relievers in baseball since coming off the injured list in April. He has slowly worked his way into more consistent big spots in Rob Thomson’s bullpen.
He started all three hitters he faced with sweepers and finished them with fastballs. Chourio struck out on a high four-seam and Joey Ortiz was caught looking on a sinker with 17 inches of horizontal break.
Sánchez’s night was cut short at just 83 pitches in a 1-0 game for José Ruiz in the seventh. Ruiz lowered his season ERA to 2.08 with a scoreless seventh. He struck out Adames swinging on a nasty curveball and Gary Sánchez on an inside sinker.
The Philadelphia Phillies took the first three-game series against the best team they’ve played all year behind a Zack Wheeler masterpiece. The Milwaukee Brewers came in tonight with the third-best offense in baseball by wRC+ but a depleted pitching staff.
Skipping to the eighth inning of a one-nothing Brewers lead, Alec Bohm faced one of the several sinker-slider arms out of Pat Murphy’s bullpen. Elvis Peguero gave Bohm a first-pitch sinker but left it high for Bohm to get it on the barrel.
Matt Strahm came in for the ninth to face the middle of the Brewers order. José Alvarado and Jeff Hoffman pitched back-to-back days so they would be unavailable no matter what.
Strahm’s scoreless streak was in danger right away. William Contreras pulled a fastball between Bohm and Edmundo Sosa into left field and Cristian Yelich followed that up with a base hit to right.
With runners on first and second with no one out, three straight dangerous right-handed hitters came up. Willy Adames hit a deep flyball to right field that allowed Contreras to tag and go to third.
With a one-two count on former Phillie Rhys Hoskins, Strahm pulled out a rare (if ever) slide-step to freeze Hoskins on an inside fastball. Gary Sánchez then hit a flyball to shallow center field. Strahm hasn’t allowed a run in 25 straight appearances.
In the bottom of the ninth, Murphy went to hard-throwing right-hander Trevor Megill to face nine, one, and two in the Phillies order.
Johan Rojas slapped a 98.8 mile-per-hour fastball into center field for a leadoff single, his ninth hit in his last eight games. Megill threw over twice before even throwing a pitch to Kyle Schwarber but it took until a high two-two fastball for Rojas to go.
Schwarber chased it for a strikeout and Rojas flew off the bag but was able to narrowly get back.
After taking one in the men’s area in the eighth, JT Realmuto had the game-winning run in scoring position. He chased a Megill curveball and fouled off a couple of upper-90s four-seam fastballs before striking out on the curve.
After Bryce Harper was intentionally walked, Bohm wasn’t able to finish the game after missing a couple of painted four-seams at the top of the zone.
Seranthony Domínguez came in for the tenth while former Phillies prospect Oliver Dunn came in to run for Sánchez.
Blake Perkins moved Dunn over to third with a groundout to shortstop. Sal Frelick came off the bench for Jackson Chourio but was hit immediately by a Domínguez fastball.
Thomson chose to have the Phillies play the infield in and it paid off when Brice Turang hit a groundball right to Bryson Stott, who nailed Dunn at home plate with a perfect throw to Realmuto.
Joey Ortiz then couldn’t get a hold of a Domínguez slider and hit a pop-up to Harper at first.
In the bottom of the tenth, Joel Payamps came in while the Phillies brought Whit Merrifield in to run for Bohm.
After intentionally walking Stott, Castellanos caught a first-pitch fastball and crushed it to the right field wall for a walk-off single.
