Tobias Harris: B
After missing three games with an injury, Harris was able to make an impact in this one on the glass. Harris was able to use his size and strength to be able to carve out some rebounding space and be able to make an immediate impact on both sides of the glass. He had a nice night scoring the ball as well and had an overall positive impact on both ends.
Joel Embiid: A
The Pistons are one of the few teams in the league with a big man who can give Embiid some trouble. When Jalen Duren is healthy, he has the size and strength to make life tough for the big fella. Embiid quickly drew two fouls on him to send him to the bench and summon James Wiseman off Detroit’s bench. Embiid was able to put together another solid scoring performance. He made some terrific passes and decisions out of the post whenever Detroit sent double teams. On a night when it appeared he was moving at half-speed, Embiid was still able to have a big night.
Paul Reed: A
The energetic big man hopped off the bench and made a quick impact. Detroit had a tough time keeping him off the glass and Reed was able to bother the Pistons with his constant energy and activity on the defensive end. There was a stretch in the second half of some Reed-Embiid lineups which produced some nice moments on both ends of the floor.
Buddy Hield: B-plus
Continuing to try and find his rhythm from deep, Hield missed his first attempt before drilling his second one thanks to the attention Embiid received. If the Sixers are to go far in the playoffs, then Hield will have to knock down those open looks from deep. That is paramount to anything Philadelphia wants to do.
Jeff Dowtin Jr.: A
The Sixers can rely on Dowtin for his ball-handling and ability to run an offense. He has an understanding of how to run what coach Nick Nurse wants to see and he continues to be reliable for the bench unit. He had some good moments in this one both on the ball and with his movement off the ball. He had a couple of nice buckets for Philadelphia’s bench unit.
Ricky Council IV: B-minus
The rookie showed a lot of poise and patience at the first quarter buzzer. With time running down, Council IV caught the ball in the corner, and threw a pump fake to let the defender go by, and then drilled a 3 at the buzzer. There is a lot to like about this rookie as he continues to progress.
De'Anthony Melton: B
In his first game back since Feb. 27, Melton buried a corner 3 within the flow of the offense. He was a bit shaky with his ball-handling, but overall, Melton looked solid. He was active on the defensive end and he was aggressive with his catch-and-shoot 3-point attempts.
The Philadelphia 76ers returned home to play host to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night looking to extend their winning streak to six. This was an important game in terms of the standings as Philadelphia continues to try to climb out of the play-in tournament.
The Pistons, who were missing a lot of key pieces, gave the Sixers a bit of a battle as they hung with Philadelphia, but the Sixers eventually turned it on and walked away with a 120-102 win to handle business against a bad Pistons team. Joel Embiid had 37 points, eight assists, and 11 rebounds to lead the way for the Sixers.
Tobias Harris added 15 points and 12 rebounds, Kelly Oubre Jr. had 17 points, and Buddy Hield had 18 points and six rebounds off the bench. De’Anthony Melton made his return to the floor after missing 21 games and he had five points while Paul Reed had eight points and six rebounds and Jeff Dowtin Jr. added eight points and six assists.
Here are the player grades following the win:
Cam Payne: B
Receiving the start in this one, Payne wasn’t able to light up the scoreboard with his shooting or anything of the sort, but he was solid. He got the Sixers into their offensive sets and he did a good job of cutting off Embiid. A game such as this one is going to be helpful for Payne in his continued education of how to play with the big fella. Defensively, there were some issues for Payne in this one, but he overall played well.
Kelly Oubre Jr.: B
It wasn’t an efficient night for Oubre as he missed some shots he normally makes, but he was able to do some good things on both ends of the floor. He moved well without the ball to get some open looks and his understanding of when to cut is going to be helpful next to Embiid. He had some key buckets in the third quarter when it appeared that Detroit was going to make a run and take the lead.
Nic Batum: B-minus
There weren’t a lot of offensive moments for Batum in this one, but his basketball IQ allowed him to bother the Pistons out on the perimeter defensively. He was also helpful on the glass and was in the right spots on the offensive end of the floor for spacing. His cutting without the ball was helpful in this one for Philadelphia as well.
